Workshop My First Step with AI

Overview

My First Step with AI is a human-centered workshop that introduces artificial intelligence to people with no digital experience through creativity, art, and guided support. In this article, you’ll learn how it works, why it’s so effective, and how to easily replicate it at home or in your community to support older adults and anyone who feels intimidated by technology.

Introduction

What if your grandmother, your father, or someone who has never used technology could discover AI without fear, without pressure, without theory—just by playing, creating, and having a simple conversation?

That question inspired the creation of this workshop. In Mexico, a country where millions feel that technology is “no longer for them,” a simple yet powerful idea emerged: What if someone’s first contact with AI could be creative, human, and guided?

That’s how My First Step with AI was born—a workshop designed so that anyone, at any age, can experience artificial intelligence in a warm, artistic, and emotionally safe way.

A First Encounter Without Fear

At NotecraftLab, we believe technology should not divide generations—it should bring them together. That’s why this workshop doesn’t begin with screens or technical explanations. It starts with something universal: creativity, imagination, and hands-on activity.

Each participant chooses a material they feel comfortable with—paper, modeling clay, colors, magazine cutouts, etc. They create art with their hands, breathe, and enjoy the moment.

And while they create, we take the next step: opening a conversation with AI. Not as students, Not as experts, but as curious people who want to try something new.

What Is This Workshop?

It’s a safe space where technology doesn’t act like a teacher but rather a companion. Participants create something physical—a drawing, a figure, a collage—and then talk to AI to:

  • Ask for ideas
  • Show what they are making (with a photo)
  • Receive simple suggestions
  • Have a creative conversation

AI doesn’t replace anything; it simply accompanies the process. The creativity remains fully human.

What Is This Workshop?

Because thousands of people with no digital experience feel left behind. Many say: “That’s not for me”, “I don’t understand technology anymore”, “I can’t even use my phone” But the truth is different:

  • It’s never too late to learn.
  • It’s never too late to take a first step.
  • And no first step should be taken alone.

This workshop offers exactly that:

  • A helping hand
  • A judgment-free space
  • A slow, gentle pace
  • An experience that restores confidence

What Makes This Workshop Unique?

  • It combines hands-on art and technology, making AI less intimidating.
  • Its structure is designed to create calm, safety, and curiosity.
  • It doesn’t teach theory—it builds confidence.
  • It doesn’t rush—it accompanies.
  • It doesn’t pressure—it invites.
  • It excludes no one—any person can participate.

It is a free, community-based, and deeply human workshop.

How to Replicate It: Quick Guide

If you already use AI—even just a little—you can recreate this workshop with your grandmother, your mom, your uncle, a neighbor, or even a small group.

Here are the simplified steps to run it at home or in your community:

1. Prepare Simple Materials

Choose any combination of:

  • White paper
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Modeling clay
  • Magazine cutouts
  • Glue

That’s all you need. The goal is to create with your hands.

2. Open ChatGPT (or any accessible AI tool)

Help the person open a new chat and ask them to type:

“Hello, this is my first time using AI.

I’m participating in a creative activity.

I’d like you to accompany me in a friendly way.”

That’s enough.

3. Start Creating

Let the person choose what they want to make:

  • A drawing
  • A figure
  • A collage
  • A shape with modeling clay

The focus is expressive—not perfect.

4. Talk to AI as a Companion

When they have something ready, ask them to take a photo and send it to AI. Suggested questions:

  • “What do you think?”
  • “What could I add?”
  • “What story could this figure tell?”

AI will respond kindly and creatively—this is the bridge.

5. Emotional Closure

The person finishes their piece, keeps it, and may take a photo of it. Recommended closing questions:

  • How did you feel?
  • Was it difficult?
  • Would you like to try something else with AI?

This is where the magic happens: the person realizes they truly can do it.

Conclusion

My First Step with AI is more than an activity, it is a bridge between generations.

A seed of confidence, an experience where technology stops intimidating and begins to accompany.

Because no one should walk toward the future with fear, and certainly not alone.
